Louisiana is moving to adopt closed-party primaries, in which Republicans and Democrats vote separately.

State lawmakers implemented closed-party primaries during this year's First Extraordinary Session.

A spokesman for the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office says voters will be required to vote in the party primary of the party they registered with.

Voters not registered with either party will choose one, but will then have to stay with it through the election cycle.

Closed primaries for some races will start in 2026. Saturday's upcoming election won't be affected.
