A proposed hike in the New Orleans trash collection fee won't be enough to restore twice-a-week trash pickup in the city.

New Orleans reduced garbage collection to once a week after Hurricane Ida in 2021.

The departing Cantrell administration proposed the first sanitation fee hike in 15 years.

Residential pickup rates would go from $24 to $36 a month. The rate for businesses would rise from $48 a month to $72.

A second day of garbage pickup would cost another $12 million, which the city doesn't have.
