Louisiana will temporarily use state money to fund food benefits for children, disabled individuals, and the elderly.
Gov. Jeff Landry announced the plan during a press conference on Wednesday.
The move is in response to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's confirmation that federal SNAP benefits won't be distributed as of November 1 because of the federal government shutdown.
Speaking from the State Capitol, Landry said about 800,000 Louisiana residents receive SNAP benefits.
