Ex-LSU football head coach Brian Kelly is suing the university for his full $54 million buyout.
Kelly's attorneys claim his firing last month was without cause, while university leaders argue that he was never formally terminated.
LSU is attempting to fire him "for cause," which would reduce or eliminate the payout.
Kelly previously rejected the university's settlement offers of $25 million and $30 million.
The lawsuit also challenges LSU's claim that former Athletic Director Scott Woodward lacked authority and says no contractual "for-cause" procedures were properly followed.
