Mayor Helena Moreno says the city will pay retention bonuses to hundreds of NOPD officers.

The City Council is expected to authorize the bonuses during today's special meeting.

Former Mayor LaToya Cantrell promised the bonuses to officers who agreed to stay on the force for another three years. Moreno pledged to honor the bonuses, but ran into a budget deficit.

The state auditor says the City Council is allowed to pay the bonuses by using emergency city funds.
