A New Orleans police recruit is in ICE custody for being in the country illegally.

NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick announced the arrest on Wednesday, but she didn't identify the recruit.

Kirkpatrick said the arrest took her department by surprise.

She said the recruit applied to join the force last June, and ICE told her an immigration judge ordered his removal from the U.S. in December.

Kirkpatrick said the recruit had been in the country for about ten years, complete with a valid driver's license and a Social Security number.
