Louisiana state health officials are trying to correct errors in the state's food assistance program in order to avoid a $95 million federal penalty.

According to last year's One Big Beautiful Bill, states with payment error rates of more than six percent must repay up to 15 percent of the money to the federal government.

Louisiana's error rate is north of seven percent, making it one of the lowest in the country.

Errors in food stamp distribution can be made by both residents and agencies, and include things such as the wrong ZIP code, not updating benefits when a person joins or leaves a household, and so forth.
