Attorney General Liz Murrill says her office worked with the NOPD to make sure the department's immigration policy follows state and federal law.

Rafael Goyeneche, president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission, says the NOPD and the Louisiana State Police don't enforce immigration law, which is the job of ICE and the Border Patrol.

Goyeneche says if state or local police arrest somebody with a federal warrant to be detained, they take him to jail. The jail is then responsible for letting the federal agencies know.
