New Orleans has a new director of emergency preparedness who will keep an eye on things during Carnival season.

Darrick Hesson stepped into the job on Monday.

The Emergency Operations Center of the city's Homeland Security Department has been securing big events like Mardi Gras, the Super Bowl, and concerts for years.

But the Bourbon Street terror attack just over a year ago revealed areas where public agencies could have better communicated with each other and possibly saved 14 lives.
