Fredrick Douglass High School will close at the end of this school year, to be merged with John F. Kennedy High School in Gentilly.

Students, staff, and most of the teachers at Douglass are moving to JFK in a consolidation to be completed by August.

Parents and students say they didn't find out about the closure until after it was a done deal. The nearly 90-year-old school was the last public high school in the Ninth Ward.

The Orleans Parish School System says the move was necessary because of declining enrollment and a budget deficit.
