The state Senate is giving its approval to a bill that would require Louisiana public school districts to operate with five-day school weeks.

GOP Senator Beth Mizell sponsored the bill that mandates five-day weeks for grades one through 12.

About a dozen Louisiana school districts that now use a four-day school week would be exempted, unless they fail to maintain an A rating in performance.

Mizell said the bill deals with problems about childcare access for working families.
