Abita Brewing Company is celebrating its 40th year of crafting beer on the North Shore.
Abita started out in 1986 as a microbrewery producing 1,500 barrels of beer. It aims to brew 170,000 barrels this year, still using water from the well in Abita Springs as the main ingredient.
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 scattered Louisiana residents to the four winds, and Abita found its beer in demand in other states as a result.
Today nearly 40,000 tourists visit the brewery every year.
