A report from the city Office of Inspector General says the response time of New Orleans Emergency Medical Services falls short of industry standards.

The OIG said Thursday that NOEMS leadership blames the delays in responses to medical emergencies on understaffing caused by noncompetitive wages.

The office says increased pay and staffing could save the city money, since it pays millions to private EMS providers such as Acadian Ambulance to pick up the slack.
