The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans is opposing a bill that would give the City Council more authority over the agency.
Mayor Helena Moreno's administration supports House Bill 573, which would allow the council to pass ordinances affecting the utility's billing and procedures for rate approval.
The legislation is in response to five water main breaks in six weeks so far this year.
Attorney Courtney Scrubbs, the chair of the Sewerage and Water Board's Governance Committee, wrote legislators on Tuesday to oppose the bill.
