The new clerk of criminal court for Orleans Parish will be sworn in today even as some state lawmakers are trying to eliminate his job.

Calvin Duncan's swearing-in is scheduled for Noon on the steps of the criminal courthouse. He takes office on May 4.

A measure in the state legislature would combine the criminal and civil courts, which would result in the elimination of Duncan's position.

Duncan describes the proposed cost-saving measure as an attempt to disenfranchise the voters who elected him.
