A suspect in Thursday's Mall of Louisiana shooting that killed a high school student from Lafayette has surrendered to authorities.
Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse announced that Markel Lee (left), 17, turned himself in Friday morning. He faces one count of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of illegal use of a weapon.
Police are also trying to identify another person (right) in connection with the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP (7867) or submit a tip via the P3 Tips App.
Martha Odom, 17, was identified as the victim who died in the shooting.
Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School In Lafayette, was described as "a joyful presence" by school leaders.
"The Odom family and mine have been friends for decades. There are no words for the devastating loss of innocent life. I’m praying for her, her family and friends, and the entire Lafayette community during this heartbreaking time. Those responsible for this senseless violence must face the full force of the law," Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said Friday.
Gov. Jeff Landry has announced a crackdown on street gangs as a response to the shooting.
Landry says the warrant roundup will be done in connection with federal agents and he's asking state lawmakers to do a review of Louisiana's sentencing laws.
