The Louisiana legislature is considering a bill that would allow honorably discharged veterans to become school resource officers.

They would also need to pass a background check and complete minimum peace officer training.

Representative Kellee Dickerson, a Republican from the Baton Rouge area, says the veterans would improve school safety while freeing up police officers to fight crime on the street.

House Bill 682 is awaiting a floor vote in the House and will head to the Senate if it's passed.
