Inspector General Ed Michel says poor internal control has allowed the New Orleans Police Department's overtime costs to skyrocket.

Michel notified NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick on Wednesday that his investigation found massive breakdowns in timekeeping and overtime controls, including violations of city policy.

As a result, the city's spending on police overtime has more than doubled, from $13 million in 2022 to nearly $27 million last year.
