St. Tammany Paris leaders are considering tax hikes to close a $22 million budget gap.
Officials say that without increased revenues, public safety and other mandated services may be cut 60 percent by next year.
In a special council meeting on Thursday, a third party presented the public with three possibilities.
An increase in either the sales tax or the property tax would require voter approval. The council could impose a franchise fee on utilities immediately, but the utility companies would likely pass that cost on to their consumers.
