A special election for clerk of the Orleans Parish civil and criminal district courts is scheduled for November.
The New Orleans City Council set the election date on Monday, and appointed retired judge Calvin Johnson as the interim clerk.
State lawmakers had merged the criminal and civil district court clerk positions, preventing Calvin Duncan from taking office as clerk of criminal court, to which he was elected in November.
The appointment of Johnson as interim replaces Chelsey Richard Napoleon, who held the merged position, and who opposes the council's move.
She and Duncan may run against each other.
