Orleans Parish Civil District Court Clerk Chelsey Richard Napoleon is suing New Orleans city officials for eliminating her position.
The City Council called a special election on Monday for the newly combined clerk's office and appointed retired judge Calvin Johnson as interim clerk. That move replaced Napoleon in the position, which she claims is illegal.
The lawsuit names Johnson, City Council president J.P. Morrell, and Mayor Helena Moreno as defendants.
After the state legislature recently merged the civil and criminal clerkships, the City Council said the state created a new office that calls for an election.
