Former Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro is announcing his upcoming retirement from Attorney General Liz Murrill's office.

Cannizzaro has headed the criminal prosecutions division of the state attorney general's office since 2021, when former attorney general Jeff Landry hired him.

Cannizzaro says Murrill asked him to stay after Landry became governor. He told her he'd stick around for a year, and it's been two and a half.

Cannizzaro says he decided to retire after a family trip on Memorial Day weekend. He steps down on June 1st.
