Voters will have a say-so this fall on the replacement of lead pipes on private property by the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans.
The state legislature passed a couple of bills to clear the way.
The first allows local governments to adopt ordinances that allow water utilities to replace lead lines on private property. The second proposes a constitutional amendment to allow such replacements to be paid for with public funds.
A water board executive says more than half of the drinking water lines in New Orleans are made of lead.
