Louisiana schools are heading into a new grading system with their strongest LEAP test scores on record.

New numbers released Monday show 36 percent of students in grades 3-12 scored Mastery or Advanced, marking the highest statewide rate in history.

These specific scores carry heavy weight for local families, since they will be the first used to calculate the state's new school letter grades.

State data shows scores improved or held steady in 28 of 31 tested courses.

“I’m proud of the progress Louisiana students continue to make, and grateful to the educators making it possible,” said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “At the same time, we cannot be satisfied and must build on this success as we raise expectations.”
