Tropics See An August Awakening

As the peak of hurricane season draws closer, the tropics are stirring a bit as forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are highlighting three areas of interest.

An area over the eastern and central tropical Atlantic is currently pegged with the best chance of further development. A tropical wave moving off the coast of Africa is expected to merge with an area of low pressure south of the Cabo Verde Islands. "Environmental conditions are forecast to be more conducive for development by midweek, and a tropical depression could form during the latter half of this week while the system moves westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic," said the NHC Monday morning.

The next name on this year's list is Cristobal.

Other areas being watched by the NHC have very low chances of further development.

The hurricane season runs through the end of November.
