It’s been 23 years since the Saints last journeyed westward to take on the Los Angeles Rams. The home team was in Anaheim then when the Saints scored a 31-15 victory.
They’re back in L.A. now when the two meet as the two biggest surprises in the NFL. The Rams come off a four and twelve season. Now at seven and three, they’ve won as many as Jeff Fisher ever did as their former coach.
Seven and nine was his high mark. Seven and nine was the trench the Saints were mired in until this year’s turnaround that has already guaranteed there won’t be another one of those.
Rookie Rams Head Coach Sean McVay at 30-years-old became the youngest head coach in NFL history upon his hiring and he has orchestrated an impressive reversal offensively. The Rams are the lowest scoring team in the NFL a year ago, but as recently as this past Sunday were the NFL’s highest-scoring attack.
After an opening drive that produced seven points against the Vikings, they got no more in a 24 to 7 throttling. In the course of it, they lost three of their top four cornerbacks and their leading wide receiver to injury. But the Saints have their own injury concerns on a defense that gave up 31 points to Washington.
The Rams, who had won four in a row before that loss, look to get back on track, The Saints look to stay on track with a ninth straight win.
The luster on one of their seasons will be diminished in defeat but it will continue to be burnished with an unexpected glow.
