Lisa & Martin At Hurricane Strength, No Threat To Louisiana

The National Hurricane Center named Martin the seventh hurricane of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season Wednesday, a few hours after Lisa reached that status.

Neither system is a threat to Louisiana.

The NHC says Hurricane Lisa is expected to bring hurricane conditions to the coast of Belize later on Wednesday.

A hurricane warning is up for that area, and also from Chetumal to Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico.

After making landfall, a weakened Lisa may re-emerge into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico but the system is not expected to regain strength.

Hurricane Martin is not currently a threat to land as it moves on a track that will take it over the far north Atlantic as an eventual extratropical system.

"Martin should get larger and stronger through tomorrow, gradually lose strength from Thursday through the weekend, but remain a very large cyclone," said the NHC. "Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles."

Forecasters have also highlighted an area in the southwestern Atlantic for possible development.

"A complex, broad area of low pressure is expected to develop this weekend near the Greater Antilles or over the southwestern Atlantic," said the NHC. "Some slow subtropical or tropical development of this system is possible afterward while it moves generally northward to northwestward."

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season ends November 30.
